A Fathers Protection

One of the lead characters in the play Fences is Troy Maxson. Troy was once able to knock a baseball out of the park, but now is constantly "missing his mark" in his personal life. By only doing what he thinks is right he ends up ruining relationships despite the warnings from those around him. The things he does is out of love with the intention to help even though he ends up hurting people more than he helps them.
Troy is missing the mark in his relationship with is son Cory, as he refuses to let him play a sport he loves as a way of protecting him. Cory has a love for football similar to his fathers love for baseball, and is over the top when he receives a college football scholarship. Rather than being proud, Troy refuses to let him play football. One of Troys greatest disappointments and heartbreaks was not being able to play major league baseball because of racial discrimination, so in return he feels like he needs to protect Cory from experiencing the same heartbreak. Cory is convinced that the only reason his father isn't letting him play football is because he is worried that Cory might better than him, and out of pure jealousy. While in reality Troy doesn't try to halt Cory's football career out of jealousy but out of his fatherly instinct to protect his son.  Once again Troy is faced with losing his son due to doing the wrong thing for what he thinks is right.
